Synology

Hardware Overview

  • Model: DS1819+
  • SSD Cache:
    • Additional M.2 NVMe card
    • 2x Samsung 980 Pro 512GB (1x write cache, 1x read cache)
  • HDD Storage:
    • 4x 16TB WD Gold (RAID configuration, see below)
  • SSD Storage:
    • 2x 512GB Samsung 8xx EVO (for fast storage or VM cache)
  • Network:
    • 4x 1GbE LAN (LAG - Link Aggregation, IEEE 802.3ad)

Storage Configuration

  • HDDs:
    • Configured in SHR-1 for redundancy and performance
    • Used for bulk storage (backups, media, general files)
  • SSD Cache:
    • NVMe SSDs configured as read/write cache for main storage pool
    • Improves performance for frequently accessed files
  • SATA SSDs:
    • Used for fast storage pool (e.g., VMs, Docker volumes)

Network Configuration

  • Link Aggregation (LAG):
    • 4x 1GbE interfaces bonded using IEEE 802.3ad (LACP)
    • Provides increased bandwidth and redundancy
    • Requires compatible switch configuration

Use Cases

  • Centralized storage for homelab and media
  • NFS/iSCSI targets for Proxmox and Kubernetes
  • Backup destination for critical data
  • Docker host for lightweight services
  • VM storage for fast access workloads

Notes

  • All sensitive configuration (users, credentials, etc.) is managed in secrets.sops.yaml and not included here.
  • See synology/readme.md for automation and provisioning details (Ansible, Docker, scripts).
  • For network setup, ensure your switch supports LACP and is configured accordingly.
